The Department of Forestry and Environmental Conservation within the College of Agriculture, Forestry and Life Sciences at Clemson University invites applications for the position of Professor and Department Chair.

Come lead a group of energetic, dedicated and innovative faculty at a Top-25 public university. This leadership role will provide an opportunity to foster continued growth in the Forestry and Environmental Conservation Department, which consists of award-winning faculty in teaching, research, and extension. The Department offers undergraduate degrees in Environmental and Natural Resources, Forest Resource Management, and Wildlife and Fisheries Biology, which collectively have an enrollment of almost 400 students. We also have a vibrant and growing graduate program that includes approximately 75 on-campus M.S. and PhD students, and over 50 students pursuing our online M.S. degree. Our 36 faculty are uniquely distributed at research and education centers throughout the state, providing opportunities for student engagement, collaborative research and public service. Faculty regularly collaborate with scientists from the U.S. Forest Service Southern Research Station and U.S. Geological Survey Cooperative Research Unit, which are housed within the department. Our department offers unified education, research and public service programs in forestry, wildlife conservation and ecology by providing excellence in instruction, scientific inquiry and outreach to citizens in South Carolina, the nation, and the world.

We are a Land Grant institution designated as an R1 university with strong community engagement. Clemson has over 24,000 students in over 180 degree programs. Located in the Upstate of South Carolina, the city of Clemson provides a small college-town setting on the shores of Lake Hartwell, near both the scenic foothills of the Blue Ridge Mountains and the metropolitan areas of Greenville-Spartanburg, SC, Asheville and Charlotte, NC, and Atlanta, GA. The University is also home to the South Carolina State Botanical Garden and the 17,500-acre Clemson Experimental Forest.

General Duties and Responsibilities:

The department chair will provide effective leadership in order to maintain and advance strong teaching, research and extension programs; recruit, retain and evaluate faculty and staff; foster strong working relations with forestry-related industries, environmental conservation agencies, and key constituency groups; and demonstrate a commitment to the Land Grant mission of the University. The successful candidate will possess a solid vision and strategy to strengthen our research, teaching, and extension missions as well as desire to grow our impacts across South Carolina, the nation, and the globe. The Chair will assist in the promotion and guidance of new initiatives in a multidisciplinary department. A PhD in a field related to any of the Department’s academic programs that will qualify eligibility to hold the rank of tenured full professor within the university is required.

Additional Desired Qualifications Include:

  • Demonstrated leadership in administration or services through a long track record of engagement in the basic academic function in a like institution
  • Strong administrative, interpersonal, communication, personnel management and consensus building skills;
  • Possess the ability to work effectively with a wide range of groups and individuals, including but not limited to, industry, university administration, government agencies, constituency groups, alumni, foundations, and other academic departments;
  • Demonstrated commitment to research as illustrated by distinguished achievements in grants, scholarship and academic reputation in the field;
  • Demonstrated ability to lead interdisciplinary, grant-funded projects that involve collaborations from multiple departments and institutions;
  • Strong knowledge, insight, and appreciation of the mission of a Land Grant University with the ability to lead and manage a multidisciplinary academic department engaged in teaching, research, and extension pursuits with faculty on campus and in the Research Education Centers;
  • Commitment and vision to assist with aligning the departmental strategic plan, goals and efforts with the goals and priorities of the Clemson Forward Plan;
  • A commitment and strategy to integrate diversity into the Forestry and Environmental Conservation Department and represented programs and curricula;
  • Experience in graduate and undergraduate training and communication and a commitment to student success;
  • Mentoring skills that encourage faculty to achieve their highest potential while also supporting a healthy work-life balance;
  • Commitment to support junior faculty to progress, grow, and succeed in their academic career;
  • Ability to maintain existing external support for the department and seek ways to create additional development opportunities (e.g., endowment for graduate research fellowship).
